EvE Geek Code
("what are your EvE biases?")
Welcome to:
THE EVE GEEK CODE
THE STATUS OF THE EVE GEEK CODE:
The EvE Geek Code is based on the Geek Code a
(brilliant) part of Internet history. Our alliance's EvE forum is rife
with opinionated folks who are in favor or against various ships, modules,
play styles, etc. One of us realized that having an EvE Geek Code
would enable posters to list their biases and thereby reduce some of the
friction their posts might otherwise generate.
This first version of the EvE Geek Code was wriiten during a caffeine high
in late April 2008.
The Code of the EvE Geeks (version 0.8)
Last updated: 25 April 2008
A NOTE OR TWO FROM THE AUTHOR
I strive to keep this simple. Yes, this idea for this code is based on the
historically wonderful Geek Code, but I'm keeping
this, as strictly as I am able to, related to EvE Online. I'm leaving
out some of the esoteric symbols that the Geek
Code used to provide shades of, and variability to the, meaning of rated
areas. (Which were seemingly so complex that even the author of the Geek Code
didn't use them universally across his own document.)
Instructions
The EvE geek code consists of several categories. Each category is labeled
with a letter and some qualifiers, trimmed down to some collection of minus
signs or plus signs from the original Geek Code. Go through each category and
determine which set of qualifiers best describes you in that category. By
stringing all of these 'codes' together, you are able to construct your overall
EvE geek code. It is this single line of code that will inform other EvE geeks
the world over of what flavor of EvE geek you actually are.
Some of the qualifiers will very probably not match with you exactly. It
is impossible to cover all possibilities in each category. Simply choose
that qualifier that most closely matches you. Also, some activities
described in a specific qualifier you may not engage in, while you do
engage in others. Each description of each qualifier describes the wide
range of activities that apply, so as long as you match with one, you can
probably use that qualifier.
After you have determined each of your qualifiers, you need to the
construct your EVE GEEK CODE BLOCK. Instructions are provided on how to do
this towards the end of this page.
THE CODE
Ship Size
The size of ship you have the skills to fly properly. When the call is
given to "bring your biggest ship," this is what you jump into. Note the
lower-case on the 's'.
- s+++++
- Titan
- s++++
- Carrier, Dreadnought, Rorqual
- s+++
- Battleship
- s++
- Cruiser
- s+
- Frigate
- s-
- Shuttle
- s--
- Newbie ship
- s---
- Pod
PvP/Pirating
P is for.... Well, it's eitehr PvP or Pirating. Let's go for PvP for now.
- P+++++
- I kill anyone anyone in my way no matter what.
- P++++
- I kill anyone in my way. Blues are safe (for now).
- P+++
- I kill non-blues when they are are competing for resources I'm after
that moment.
- P++
- I kill all non-blues I see.
- P+
- I kill macroers and actively defend our space.
- P-
- I kill to defend our home turf, preferring not to PvP.
- P--
- I'll try to defend myself if I'm locked down before I can run to a station.
- P---
- I never, ever fight.
-
-
Mining
Mining roids or ice. The staple of production and fueling.
- M+++++
- I mine and refine everything, including scrap metal. I can full boost
mining operations if I'm not mining. I fly a rorqual. I chew rocks in my sleep.
- M++++
- I mine and refine everything, including scrap metal. I can full boost
mining operations if I'm not mining.
- M+++
- I do one role during mining ops. I can either boost or mine, not both.
- M++
- I mine to make my living.
- M+
- I have trained minimal mining skills, but I can ''participate'' in
mining ops using extremely low quality ships and lasers.
- M-
- I don't mine. Don't you need a hauler or a defender, or a scout? Please?
- M---
- OMG I hate those carebears who mine.
Ratting
Killing rats to get money, alloys, security status gains.
- R+++
- Killing rats is my activity of choice.
- R++
- I kill rats to get money to pay for other activities in the game.
- R+
- I kill rats if there an alliance op to collect alloys.
- R-
- I dont have the time or ship or inclination to kill silly robotic ships.
- R--
- Hate ratting, no matter how endowed I am with ships, time, and inclination.
Stealth Bombers
- SB+++
- I live in a stealth bomber, no matter what the fleet or situation.
- SB++
- I love my Stealth Bomber, but dearly wish our fleets used them more
effectively, and instead fly another ship until that time comes.
- SB+
- I can see the potential usefullness of Stealth Bombers, but I don't fly one.
- SB-
- Stealth Bombers are useless cruft in the galaxy.
- SB--
- I don't fly Stealth Bombers, and anyone who does is acting against the alliance.
- SB---
- Stealth Bombers make me break out in hives, cause children to fail out of
school, cause world hunger across the galaxy, and are the direct cause of
us losing alliance controlled space.
Micro Warpdrives
These babies make your ship go fast, reduce your available capacitor when
mounted, and increase you signature radius when turned on. But man do they
have their uses. Or do they?
- MWD+++++
- Every ship I fly has an MWD mounted. Using an MWD is the salvation of EvE, the
single must-have module ever introduced to the game.
- MWD++++
- I will reluctantly pull off my MWD if there is some well-presented damn
good reason to not use one.
- MWD+++
- I loves me mah MWD, but I'm not fanatic about it.
- MWD++
- I clearly understand the usefullness of MWD, I'll fit one if I have room.
- MWD+
- I understand the usefulness of MWDs. Usually they are competing for
another item in my midslots, however.
- MWD-
- I rarely use an MWD, maybe if I'm ferrying a ship around or something.
- MWD--
- MWDs turn your ship into a death trap! You're crazy to use one.
Dampeners
Just how useful are dampeners?
- D+++
- The order was given. Dampeners are required on all cruisers and battleships.
There is no exception.
- D++
- The order was given. A dampener is required on cruisers and
battleships. There are some cases where they don't make sense, and I'll remove
mine after appropriate contemplation.
- D+
- Dampeners are useful, but I rarely fit one no matter who is giving what orders.
- D-
- I laugh at people who use dampeners. We need more of anything but dampeners.
- D--
- I can't even fit a dampener.
Doomsday Protection
We are fighting enemies with Titans at their disposal and may face one or
more types of doomsday damage on the field. Because of this....
- D++++
- I can tank both a kinetic and explosive DD hit, even if they both hit me
within a short time.
- D+++
- I can tank both damage types, but only one hit of either kinetic or explosive doomsday weapon.
- D++
- I can tank one hit of doomday. To survive, I need to know which one is
going to hit me beforehand.
- D+
- Shield or armor tanks a DD? Pfft. I speed tank them.
- D-
- Sorry, don't have room to tank a DD blast with my setup.
- D--
- I never tank for DD damage.
Local
How does local figure into your life?
- local+++
- Local is fine the way it is, in fact they should add BACONesque audio
alerts into the client
- local++
- Local is fine the way it is, I'm constantly looking at local.
- local+
- I do have a local window. What about it?
- local-
- Local is bad news, and keeps me from killing people. When it goes, it
may need some other changes to balance the game.
- local--
- Remove names from local. What is taking so long? Maybe leave the
player count bit but that is all.
- local---
- Local is the epitome of evil. Remove it. Remove it all.
-

Farmers
Farmers. They are here. Let me tell you how I really feel....
- F+++
- Farming for isk to sell is A-OK! I even do it!
- F++
- Farming for isk to sell is A-OK!
- F+
- Whether a person is farming for isk to sell is none of my business.
- F-
- Farming for isk to sell is against the TOS.
- F---
- Farmers for isk to sell need to die in a fire. Twice. Maybe three times.
How to Display Your Code
Now that you have your ratings for each of the above categories, it's
time to assemble your code for displaying to the world. Take each
category you determined and list them all together with one space between
each one. If you run out space on one line, continue it on the next.
When completed, it will look something like the following:
s++++ P+ M++ R++ SB++ MWD- D-- DD++ local+ F---
If you are going to place your EvE Geek Code into your signature(highly
recommended), you should create your EVE GEEK CODE BLOCK. This
parody of the output created by the PGP program will attempt to
universalize how you will see the EvE Geek Code around the net (or at least in
our alliance forums). Your EVE GEEK CODE BLOCK will look like the following:
-----BEGIN EVE GEEK CODE BLOCK-----
Version: 0.8
s++++ P+ M++ R++ SB++ MWD- D-- DD++ local+ F---
------END EVE GEEK CODE BLOCK------
As you can see, the actual code hasn't changed. However, the version
number of the code you are using is displayed along with lines starting
and ending the code. Make sure to duplicate the start and end lines
exactly as the example in order to maintain a net-wide standard (ie., five
dashes front and back for the BEGIN line and six for the END line, and all
capital letters.)
Order is not strictly important.
