Neopet Code

The Neopet Code is a code for users of virtual pet site Neopets, specifically those who roleplay as their Neopet:

The Neopet Code is a fun way to put a lot of information about your Neopet into one single line of text. Instead of writing a paragraph long description about your Neopet (on Neopets.com), you can condense all of that information into one line of text. Think of the Neopet Code as a “Secret Code” aimed generally at people who Role Play as their Neopets in Neoboards and Roleplay Guilds. When you write out your code using it and give it to another player, they must use this page to “Decode” it and figure things out about your NeoPet.

This time we’ve got a doodle of SpectraDevil, a lupe from Neopets. Once upon a time, long long ago (circa 2000), she was the alpha of a pack called “Seize the Night.”

The pack has since disbanded, but rumour has it that there are still sightings of the old ‘Devil from time to time in the Haunted Forest.

This code was hosted on the user’s Neopets.com page, but the page was excluded from archive.org.

The original date of publication is unclear, but the NeoPets site launched on 1999-11-15, and author soulwolf mentions that they started posting on NeoPets roleplay boards in October 2000.

Decoder notes

The code appears to have changed over time, judging by examples in this thread:

• Neopet Species is occasionally found with m or f at the end to mark the pet’s gender.
• Some groups do not match the spec. The decoder matches the spec, ignoring these groups despite their presence in the author’s example. Known mismatches:
  • B (“Battledome interest”) e.g. --, +++
  • N (“Neopet siblings”) e.g. [3])
  • S (“Single”, not sex/gender) e.g. - l-
  • Y (?) e.g. [0]

The dagger symbol † appears to be interchangeable with the plus sign +.

Spots (...), stripes (|||), flames (u), stars (ar), and bicolor eyes (bi) have not yet been implemented in the decoder.
