Were Code (Blackfang/MegaDog)

A variant of Furry Code, Were Code is a proposed code for werewolves and werewolf fans.

This Were Code seems to be an indirect collaborative effort across September 1996, and is inconsistent in its labeling. The code seems to originate from an initial suggestion by MegaDog and an ensuing thread with contributions from others (e.g. Howling Heart). Blackfang first posted a version labeled 0.5 on September 29 with 24 sections closely resembling the Furry Code. On that same thread the next day, MegaDog posted their version labeled 0.99 consisting of 4 sections but promising to “[add] parts of it to what i’ve got so far”. MegaDog later reposted this shorter version as “0.9”, but a resources FAQ from February 1997 reposted Blackfang’s version still labeled as 0.5. Orion Scribner’s Otherkin Timeline (2010/2012, page 47) only acknowledges 0.5 and the FAQ; it credits Blackfang alone.

Prior to this Were Code, a separate quasi-profile called a “Werecard” or “Were Card” was popular on alt.horror.werewolves seemingly dating to June 1994. Though MegaDog lists their code as “werecard0.9”, neither Were Code is of the same format or questions as the Were Card.

This code is one of three codes titled “Were Code” codes alongside SabreLion’s code on were.net and Silverwere’s code for the Werebeast’s Guild.

“CyberLegend aka Jure Sah” offered a Were Code decoder in 2002 available upon email request. It has not yet been found.
